Vaheguru Ji ka khalsa Vaheguru ji ki fateh

The parent-child connection is the most powerful mental health intervention known to mankind.’

This month we decided to shift things a little and really use what we do professionally to inform our workshop. Our workshops are aimed at families and are created to offer support and sangat and so we felt Children’s mental health week (1st Feb- 8th Feb) was a great opportunity to share our experiences working with children in our day to day 9-5s. We wanted to show our support and introduce the amazing world of Drama Psychotherapy and so our third workshop, ‘Co-regulation and Self-regulation’ took place on the 7th February.

This workshop was a two-part workshop, the first hour was dedicated to the parents/carers of the children. Although we live for creative working, we kept our presentation and focus on facts about Drama psychotherapy, what it is, how it’s used by practitioners and how relevant it is for any Mental Health Multidisciplinary team. The workshop introduced the concepts of co-regulation and self-regulation and the importance of supporting children in this forever changing world. We also used this opportunity to touch on Kisaan morcha and the impact on family life. It was lovely working with adults, sharing tips and really thinking about how our children speak to us through non-verbal and verbal cues. It was a great place for parents/carers to discuss and share their experiences and their knowledge.

The second part of the workshop was dedicated to our little friends. As you all have realised, little people are our favourite workshoppers. We introduced the ‘hope box’ and asked our workshoppers to paint, colour, decorate and just go full on creative mode and create their hope box. The purpose of this box was to provide children with a safe place to express themselves. Any worries, any fears and happy moments too of course! We asked our families to play baani in the background, to sit with the child and encourage them to use their own decision making and play to create what they wanted.

Although this was a first for us, this is definitely something we wish to do more of and we have decided to incorporate more tools to support well-being and mental health of both children and adults. We hope everyone who attended had a lovely day with us and for those that weren’t able to make it, have a look at the masterpieces created. Until next month,

Vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fatheh.
